Canadian Celeb Power List

Canadian Celeb Power List

Canadian Celebrities Power List

Jim Carrey remains the most powerful Canadian actor, according to Canadian Business magazine’s fourth annual Celebrity Power List, our ranking of the most powerful actors in Hollywood. This is thanks in part to the success of the actor’s most recent film, the animated Horton Hears a Who! Three people fell off the list in 2008: Anna Paquin, Evangeline Lilly and Matthew Perry. They were replaced by two familiar faces, Hayden Christensen and Brendan Fraser, who both appeared on the 2006 list, and a new one: Ellen Page, who made her mark as a pregnant teen quick with the witty one-liners in Juno.

1. Jim Carrey

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 1
Salary rank: 1
Web-hits rank: 2
TV-mentions rank: 3
Press-hits rank: 5

Dr. Seuss helped Jim Carrey top our list for the third year in a row. Eight years after he stole Christmas as the Grinch, Carrey scored again as the titular elephant in Horton Hears a Who! He’s got more adaptation projects coming up. Yes Man, based on the memoir of a man who says “yes” to everything for a year, is out in December, then it’s back to computer animation as Scrooge and the three ghosts in 2009′s A Christmas Carol.

2. Kiefer Sutherland

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 9
Salary rank: 3
Web-hits rank: 5
TV-mentions rank: 4
Press-hits rank: 6

Kiefer Sutherland is still going strong with 24, which returns with its seventh season in January. In the meantime, he seems to have embraced his law-enforcement tough-guy niche, playing an ex-cop in the 2008 horror flick Mirrors. He’ll also voice a general in the computer-animated Monsters vs. Aliens, to be released in 2009.

3. Keanu Reeves

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 1
Salary rank: 4
Web-hits rank: 3
TV-mentions rank: 11
Press-hits rank: 15

The stoic actor is something of a sci-fi action star: the Matrix trilogy re-anointed him as an A-lister, though 2005′s big-budget film Constantine flopped. His most recent offering, Street Kings, had him playing a grizzled, rulebreaking LAPD cop who’s forced to reconsider his loyalties. Next, he stars opposite Jennifer Connelly in a remake of the 1951 classic The Day the Earth Stood Still, to be released in December.

4. Mike Myers

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 9
Salary rank: 2
Web-hits rank: 11
TV-mentions rank: 5
Press-hits rank: 15

The spectacular flop that was The Love Guru — which managed to both bomb at the box office and offend Hindus — dropped Mike Myers a couple of spots. Still, the Scarborough, Ont., native can always recover his mojo with his more winning characters. Shrek Goes Fourth is due in 2010 and a fourth Austin Powers is rumoured to be in the works. Before that, he’ll appear as a British general alongside Brad Pitt in Inglorious Bastards, a Quentin Tarantino flick due out next June.

5. Seth Rogen

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 1
Salary rank: 7
Web-hits rank: 13
TV-mentions rank: 8
Press-hits rank: 15

Seth Rogen has come a long way since TV show Freaks and Geeks, the critics’ darling with anemic ratings. These days, Rogen is box-office boffo with a hand in two of 2007′s hits: he starred in Knocked Up, lent his writing and acting chops to Superbad, and produced both. His most recent film was Pineapple Express, the stoner comedy he wrote, produced and co-starred in that broke the record for a Wednesday opening with a US$12.5 million opening-day box-office take. Next up from the funnyman is Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno, opening in wide release in October after screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. He’s also signed on to write and star in the Green Hornet movie, due out in 2010.

6. Pamela Anderson

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 15
Salary rank: 15
Web-hits rank: 1
TV-mentions rank: 1
Press-hits rank: 2

Canada’s own quintessential blonde bombshell wades into the world of reality TV this year with E!’s Pam, Girl on the Loose, which promises to give viewers a “peek inside her life” like they’ve never seen before. Starring as Invisible Girl in the forgettable Superhero Movie earlier this year did little to inflate her career, but her ongoing work for animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) ensured Pam’s name was well represented in the press. She’ll be back on movie screens next year in the comedy Hollywood & Wine.

7. Ellen Page

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 14
Salary rank: 13
Web-hits rank: 4
TV-mentions rank: 2
Press-hits rank: 1

This year, Ellen Page followed up her breakthrough 2007 with a role in the feel-good comedy-drama Smart People, playing Dennis Quaid’s intelligent yet haughty daughter in search of herself. She also showed her Canadian colours by appearing in a film adaptation of Margaret Laurence’s iconic novel The Stone Angel. She will be seen in 2009 in the thriller Peacock and in Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It!, playing a rebellious daughter who runs off to join a roller derby league. Only 21 and already high in the Web- and press-hits rankings, don’t be surprised to see that salary spot move upward as well.

8. Ryan Gosling

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 1
Salary rank: 6
Web-hits rank: 12
TV-mentions rank: 11
Press-hits rank: 7

The former Best Actor Oscar nominee received a Golden Globe nom this year, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, for his work in last year’s Lars and the Real Girl. His split late last year from fellow Canuck Rachel McAdams, and rumours that they are back together, helped to bolster his notoriety. He’ll soon be seen with Kirsten Dunst in the Manhattan mystery All Good Things. Work on a drama, Blue Valentine, was put on hold in January due to co-star Michelle Williams needing time to cope with the death of former boyfriend Heath Ledger. He is currently on the set of Broken Kingdom, of which he is the executive producer.

9. Brendan Fraser

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 1
Salary rank: 5
Web-hits rank: 10
TV-mentions rank: 10
Press-hits rank: 12

Fraser’s year was highlighted by his lead role in the generally well-received summer spectacular Journey to the Center of the Earth, a 3D version of the ageless Jules Verne tale, and in the third installment in The Mummy Series, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Another fantastical effort, Inkheart, is slated to hit theatres early in the new year, while Fraser takes a lesser role as a sergeant in the live action version of the G.I. Joe action figure, scheduled for a summer release.

10. William Shatner

Box-office/TV-ratings rank: 12
Salary rank: 8
Web-hits rank: 6
TV-mentions rank: 6
Press-hits rank: 8

With the same determination with which he fought off Klingons four decades ago, this veteran actor is defeating the forces of age and enjoying a still-thriving career — on both the small and silver screens. On the former, Shatner returns this fall as self-absorbed law firm partner Denny Crane for the final season of Boston Legal. On the latter, he will appear in a cameo role in 2009′s Horrorween, a comedy/horror centered around a haunted house owned by two student dot-com millionaires.
