Dentists sell out to Coca-Cola
This past month, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) announced they were accepting a million dollar research grant from Coca-Cola. Given the growing concerns about the role of soft drinks in causing dental and other health problems for children, this partnership sends a troubling message to parents by implicitly endorsing the Coca-Cola company and it’s products.
The money, however, has not yet been spent. It’s not too late to remind the AAPD’s president and executive director that a company that aggressively markets sugary drinks and empty calories to young people is not an appropriate partner for a children’s health organization.
